Kiné Lam, born in Dakar, is a prominent female voice in Senegal since the late 1980s. She made history as the first woman singer in Senegal to form her own band and to perform in the modern mbalax style. Her musical journey began in 1972 when she started a traditional group that performed across various cities and towns. She later joined the Theatre Daniel Sorano in Dakar, where she was an artist in residence for 12 years. In 1989, she left the theater to establish the group Le Kaggu, which translates to "library." Her debut album, "Cheick anta Mbacké," produced a number-one hit, and she has been recognized as Senegal's best female vocalist three times. Throughout the 1990s, she was highly productive, releasing numerous albums. Kiné was married to Ndongo Malick Coumba Thiam, known as 'Dogo,' until his passing in 2019 after a prolonged illness.
