**King Tubby** Born on January 28, 1941, in Kingston, Jamaica, King Tubby is renowned for his significant influence on the development of dub music in the 1960s. With a diploma in electronics, he opened a small store in his family's backyard where he repaired electronic equipment. Overwhelmed by the work, he was assisted by "Barry," who was skilled at building large loudspeakers. In 1958, he established Tubby's Home Town Hi Fi in Waterhouse, quickly earning the title "King" and becoming one of the best sound systems on the island by the late 1960s. In 1968, Tubby began collaborating with various artists and started making remixes of hit songs, primarily by removing the vocals. He soon shifted focus to the instrumentals, adding and removing sounds, and incorporating special effects like echoes and feedback. By 1968, his sound system was one of the most popular in Kingston until it was destroyed by police in 1975. In 1971, he opened his own studio, equipping it with second-hand gear, including a two-track console and an acetate engraving machine, allowing him to produce several dub plates. His remixes gained immense popularity, making him a celebrity in Jamaica. Throughout the 1970s, Tubby's studio work contributed to the rise of modern dub music.
