Kirsty MacColl (October 10, 1959 – December 18, 2000) was an English singer-songwriter born in Croydon, South London. She was the daughter of folk singer and dancer Jean Newlove. After a brief period with her first band in 1978, Kirsty went solo and achieved success with her hit single "There's A Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis" in 1981. In 1984, she married producer Steve Lillywhite and had two children, including a son who later became a manager. Tragically, Kirsty died while swimming with her children in Cozumel, Mexico, when she was struck by a speedboat in a restricted area. Her final album, "Tropical Brainstorm," was released posthumously in early 2001.
