Klaus Doldinger was a renowned German jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer, born on May 12, 1936, in Berlin, Germany. He passed away on October 16, 2025, in Icking, Germany. Doldinger gained recognition as a fusion musician in the 1970s with his band and as a prominent composer of film soundtracks, notably for "Das Boot" and "The Neverending Story," as well as the iconic theme for Germany's famous TV series "Tatort." He began his musical journey at the age of 16, studying piano and clarinet in Düsseldorf. In 1952, he joined a Dixie band and founded his first jazz band in 1955, named after his idol. Alongside his music career, he studied sound engineering and toured the United States from 1960 to 1962, earning honorary citizenship in New Orleans. In 1962, he established a popular jazz ensemble that recorded influential albums throughout the 1960s. In 1968, Doldinger transitioned to jazz rock and fusion, forming a new band with notable musicians. This band evolved into a successor band in 1971, which became one of the most influential German fusion rock bands of the 1970s, remaining active until 1985 and again from 2016 to 2021.
