Kodak Black, born Dieuson Octave on June 11, 1997, in Pompano Beach, Florida, is an American rapper raised by his mother in the Golden Acres public housing project. His parents were migrants from Haiti. Kodak Black began rapping in elementary school and frequently visited a local trap house to record music. He expanded his vocabulary by reading thesauruses and dictionaries. His youth was marked by involvement in fights and criminal activities, leading to expulsion from school in the fifth grade and an arrest for auto theft in middle school. He described his upbringing as presenting him with two options: to sell drugs or to rap. From the age of six, he used the nickname "Black" and later "Lil' Black." Upon joining Instagram, he adopted the username 'Kodak Black,' which he chose because "Kodak" relates to pictures, and this name eventually became his stage name and a favorite among his fans.
