Komitas, born Soghomon Gevorki Soghomonyan on September 26, 1869, in Kütahya, Ottoman Empire, was an Armenian priest, composer, choir leader, singer, music ethnologist, pedagogue, and musicologist. He was ordained as a priest and adopted the name Komitas, honoring a 7th-century Armenian Catholic hymn writer. He is recognized as the father of modern classical Armenian music and was the first extra-European member and co-founder of the International Music Society. Throughout his life, Komitas gave numerous lectures and performances across Europe and the Near East, introducing Armenian popular music to a broader audience. He witnessed the Armenian genocide in 1915, which led to significant mental health struggles. The last 16 years of his life were spent in a psychiatric clinic in Paris, where he passed away on October 22, 1935.
