KONK was formed in 1980 in New York City, emerging during a vibrant period of post-punk/new wave and disco. The band gained attention by blending these two musical styles, combining a new wave attitude with the carefree nature of disco's dance crowd. Their influences included Afrobeat, jazz, funk, and hip hop, resulting in a highly percussive sound characterized by simple yet strong backing bass lines. As part of New York’s post-punk dance scene, KONK frequently performed alongside notable groups such as Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, ESG, The Peech Boys, and The Lounge Lizards. They have also been featured in a recent book by David Byrne and others that focuses on the New York post-punk scene.
