Kool Moe Dee, born Mohandas Dewese on August 8, 1962, is a prominent figure in hip hop. He began his career with The Treacherous Three before pursuing a degree in communications in New York. Kool Moe Dee is known for his infamous battle against Busy Bee and for kickstarting his solo career while still with Sugar Hill, releasing the single "Turn It Up" and contributing to the Sugar Hill Gang's "The Down Beat" in 1985. After fully reentering the hip hop scene, he collaborated with producer Teddy Riley, achieving fame with the single "Go See the Doctor." In 1986, he signed with Jive and released his first solo album. His 1987 album "How Ya Like Me Now" and its title track marked a high point in his career, during which he engaged in a lyrical battle with LL Cool J. The exchange included tracks such as "Jack the Ripper," "Let's Go," "To The Break of Dawn," and "Death Blow." Kool Moe Dee made history as the first rapper to perform at the Grammy Awards and participated in the Stop The Violence Movement with the single "Self Destruction." He was also involved in Quincy Jones' project "Back on the Block." Throughout the 1990s, he continued to release albums, though with limited success, apart from his greatest hits collections.
