Kraan is a German Krautrock and Jazz Fusion band that originated in Ulm, formed in 1970. The members initially came together in a group called "Progressive Jazz Group Ulm" while still in school. In 1968, a rock band named "Inzest" was formed, which included siblings Jan Fride and others who studied in Berlin. By 1969, "Inzest" aimed to become a professional band, and in 1970, the musicians, along with Johannes Pappert, founded the first incarnation of Kraan. After a brief period in Berlin, bassist Hellmut Hattler had a dispute with the band and moved to Wintrup, near Paderborn, where he was invited by the Progressive Rock band Erna Schmidt. The musicians from Kraan eventually moved in with Hattler, leading to a community living situation. However, the two bands proved to be incompatible, resulting in the split of Erna Schmidt. In 1971, Kraan reformed in Wintrup with Hattler back in the band, and they lived together at a 5th-century farm. This community lasted for about 15 years in various configurations. They recorded their first two albums in 1972 and 1973, followed by their third album, "Andy Nogger," in 1974, which was their first produced by an external producer. The band went on their first hiatus in 1977 but reunited later
