Kula Shaker is a British indie-rock band formed in 1988 by Crispian Mills and Alonza Bevan while they were in college. The band has undergone various lineup and name changes, previously known as The Kays, and included members such as one of Hayley Mills' ex-boyfriends on vocals. Their sound is famously tinged with Eastern influences, largely due to Crispian's Hinduism and a pilgrimage he undertook in 1993. The band originally split in 1999 due to personality clashes, record company interference, and the pressure from the media following some misinterpreted quotes by Crispian in 1997. After the split, Crispian worked on a project called Pi, which never materialized, while Alonza joined another band and formed a short-lived group called Shep. Winter-Hart also played in a short-lived band and drummed for another group, while Jay Darlington became a live and session musician with another band and continued after their split in 2009. In 2002, Kula Shaker released a compilation titled "Kollected," which Crispian compiled and wrote sleeve notes for, featuring a previously unreleased Bob Dylan cover that became their final recorded song before the breakup. The band reformed in 2004 for a one-off song, "Braj Mandala," on a charity compilation album, with Crispian serving as creative director.
