Kyle Gann (b. 1955) is an American composer, musicologist, critic, writer, and journalist. He serves as the Chair of the Division of the Arts and holds the Taylor Hawver & Frances Bortle Hawver Professorship of Music. Gann grew up in a musical family and began composing at the age of 13. He received a B.Mus. degree in 1977, followed by M.Mus. (1981) and D.Mus. (1983) degrees, with his principal teacher being [teacher's name]. He also studied composition with [another teacher's name] from 1984 to 1986. In 1980, Gann co-founded the radical performing group Chicago Interarts Ministry with [names] and Peter Gena. He worked for the New Music America festival in 1981 and lectured at [institution name] from 1986 to 1988. After several part-time teaching positions at Bucknell University, [another institution], and [another institution], he joined the faculty at Bard College in 1997. As a composer, Gann writes microtonal electronic music and rhythmically complex compositions for Disklavier, as well as solo piano and ensemble pieces. His music often features repeating loops, ostinatos, and isorhythms that go out of phase with one another, drawing inspiration from astrology and Native American music, particularly from Hopi, Zuni, and other Southwest
