Kyuss is a stoner rock band formed in 1988 in Palm Desert, California, initially under the name 'Katzenjammer' by members Joshua Homme (lead guitar), Nick Oliveri (rhythm guitar), Chris Cockrell (bass), Brant Bjork (drums), and John Garcia (vocals). The band changed their name to Kyuss in 1989 and released a self-titled EP the following year. In 1991, they officially shortened their name to 'Kyuss' and went on to release four full-length albums between 1991 and 1995 before disbanding. During their early years, Nick Oliveri left Katzenjammer, but later returned when Chris Cockrell departed. After recording two albums, Oliveri left again and was replaced by Scott Reeder. In 1994, Brant Bjork left the band, later joining Fu Manchu in 1996, while Alfredo Hernandez joined Kyuss. The band ultimately broke up in 1996, leading John Garcia to form a new project and Joshua Homme to form another. In 1996, John Garcia and Scott Reeder formed a band together, while Nick Oliveri formed a different group in 1997. Between 1998 and 1999, Joshua Homme, Nick Oliveri, and Alfredo Hernandez collaborated on a new project.
