L’Ambassadeur des Ombres was a unique musical project that emerged during the waning days of the GDR in 1988/89. Drawing inspiration from the French science fiction comic “Valérian et Laureline,” the group combined pop appeal with experimental sounds, reflecting the zeitgeist of their generation. Their music was created in a children's room, yet it was imbued with a complex edifice of ideas, akin to a demolition site. The ensemble was a hybrid of the wave bands Die Vision and Neuntage, with roots tracing back to various DIY projects, including the Mahlsdorfer Wohnstuben Orchester, Zerstörte Umwelt, and the dark-wave acts Fellini Prostitutes and Nontoxic. Despite their brief existence, L’Ambassadeur des Ombres did not perform any concerts. Instead, they circulated their tape “Strike Me If I Shriek” among friends and musicians as a work report, making it a long-overdue discovery in the music scene.
