Larry Marshall was a Jamaican reggae singer, born on December 17, 1941, in Lawrence Hall, St. Ann, Jamaica. He passed away on August 24, 2017. Marshall began his music career in 1962 with the Top Deck label. In 1967, he joined Coxsone Records, where he was part of a group formed by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd but left after recording three songs due to a lack of control over his work. Following this, he recorded tracks like "I've Got Another Girl," "Dark End of the Street," and "Judge Dread" with Prince Buster. In 1968, Marshall moved to Studio One, where he collaborated with Alvin Leslie to produce notable tracks such as "Nanny Goat," "Mean Girl," and "Your Love," which contributed to the development of the reggae sound. However, by the end of 1973, disputes over royalties and tensions led to his departure from Studio One. He then released classic singles like "I Admire You" and "Can't You Understand" on Carl Patterson's Black and White label, featuring dub versions by King Tubby. Further financial disputes prompted him to focus on self-production, leading to the establishment of the Amanda label and the release of the "I Admire You" album in limited quantities in Jamaica and the UK on the Java label in 1975.
