László Hortobágyi is a Hungarian composer born in 1950 in Budapest. With a degree in ethnomusicology, he is known for his expertise in imaginative sonic journeys. As a respected outsider in Hungary, Hortobágyi has pursued a fulfilling and peaceful career, distancing himself from the obligations of the cultural industry. He began his exploration of music by visiting North India in 1967, where he learned to play instruments such as the rudra-vina, sitar, surbahar, and tabla, while also recording music and studying Indian philosophy. In 1981, he founded the Gáyan Uttejak Society, an imaginary musical organization that served as both a studio and an archive for his discoveries in ethnomusicology. An innovator in technology, Hortobágyi developed his own sound processing software and began using computers for music in 1988. He often combines traditional and modern instruments with structures from both the past and present. Despite his uncompromising approach, which has kept him in a marginal position, Hortobágyi has established himself as one of the most vibrant cartographers of East and West musical mythologies after decades of recording.
