Laura Branigan was an American singer, songwriter, and actress, born on July 3, 1952, in Mount Kisco, Westchester County, New York. She graduated from Byram Hills High School in June 1970 and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan from 1970 to 1972. Branigan began her recording career in 1972 with the folk group Meadow and toured in 1976 as a backing singer on a European tour. She signed with Atlantic Records in 1979. Her first single with Atlantic charted at number 62, but her next single, a remake of another artist's song, reached number 2 in the U.S. Influenced by various musical styles, Branigan produced several big hits, including "Gloria," "Self Control," and "Power of Love." After releasing her seventh album for Atlantic in 1993, she semi-retired from music to care for her husband, Larry Kruteck, who was battling cancer. He passed away in 1996. In addition to her music career, Branigan appeared in the films "Mugsy's Girls" (1985) and "Backstage" (1988), and had roles in TV shows such as "CHiPS" (1983), "Automan" (1984), and "Monsters" (1991).
