Laurie Spiegel, born on September 20, 1945, in Chicago, is a musician and composer known for her contributions to music and technology. In her teens, she played guitar, banjo, and mandolin, developing a strong philosophy of amateur music making. After earning a degree in social sciences, she returned to music, teaching herself notation and studying classic guitar and composition in London. She furthered her education at Juilliard, focusing on baroque and renaissance lute, and composition with notable mentors. Since 1969, she has worked with analog synthesizers and sought greater compositional control through digital computers, writing interactive compositional software at Bell Labs from 1973 to 1979. Spiegel later founded New York University's Computer Music Studio and gained recognition in rock music circles for her music software for personal computers, particularly MusicMouse.
