Laurie Styvers was a British-based, American singer-songwriter born as Laurette Stivers in Texas on August 3, 1951. She moved to London in 1966, where she attended the American School in London and joined the folk-psych group Justine. Although she participated in the group's recording sessions, she left to attend college in Colorado before their eponymous LP was released in May 1970. Styvers re-joined Justine later that year, but the group disbanded shortly thereafter. Following this, producer Hugh Murphy signed her to a recording contract with Hush Productions. Styvers recorded her debut solo album, Spilt Milk, in the spring of 1971 with British session musicians and released it in the US on Warner Brothers in October of that year. She made brief promotional appearances in the US but soon returned to college in Denver. The album had a delayed release in the UK on Chrysalis in May 1972, accompanied by the single "Beat The Reaper," which received airplay on Radio 1. Styvers returned to the UK to record her second album, The Colorado Kid, which was released in the UK and other territories but not in the US. Despite favorable reviews and airplay, she decided to end her music career and returned to the United States for good. Eventually, she moved back to Texas, where she started an animal rescue center with her father. Laurie Styvers passed away from hepatitis on February 18,
