Lauryn Hill is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, recording artist, musician, producer, and actress born on May 26, 1975, in East Orange, NJ. She gained recognition early in her career as a member of a music group. In 1998, she launched her solo career with the release of a commercially successful and critically acclaimed album that earned her five Grammy Awards, including album of the year and best new artist. Following the success of her debut album, Hill largely withdrew from public view, partly due to her dissatisfaction with fame and the music industry. After a four-year hiatus, she released a live recording of "deeply personal songs" performed mostly solo with an acoustic guitar. Today, she avoids publicity and is the mother of five children with the fourth son of a reggae musician.
