Lawrence English is an Australian artist, composer, and curator known for his explorations of perception, memory, and the politics of listening. His work spans various mediums, including visceral live performances and site-specific installations, inviting audiences to reflect on their relationship with sound and space. As a Sidney Myer Creative Fellow and recipient of an outstanding doctoral thesis award in 2017, English has made significant contributions to the field of sound art. His public artwork project, Seirá, received support from the Mike Kelley Foundation. In his gallery practice, English's work often engages with concepts of spatial field and relativity, exemplified by his piece Audition (2015) for the Asia Pacific Triennial, which features large acoustic mirrors that enhance listeners' auditory experiences. His 2014 album, Wilderness Of Mirrors, has been recognized as a significant contribution to adventurous Australian music, blending acoustic and electronic elements to create a unique sonic experience. As a curator, English has advanced the recognition of sound as an art form in Australia through his record label and multi-arts organization Room40. He has curated exhibitions featuring international and Australian sound artists across Australia, Singapore, and The Philippines, and is currently preparing an exhibition for The Getty’s Pacific Standard Time in Los Angeles for 2024. English has also directed numerous sound performance festivals, including Room40’s Open Frame, Liquid Architecture, and others, presenting over 400 artists throughout his curatorial career. He actively mentors musicians and artists and has published essays
