Leadbelly, born Huddie William Ledbetter on January 23, 1888, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, was an American folk and blues singer, musician, and songwriter renowned for his powerful vocals and exceptional skill on the twelve-string guitar. He is celebrated for introducing a number of folk standards, including his famous renditions of "Goodnight, Irene," "Midnight Special," "Cotton Fields," and "Boll Weevil." Leadbelly passed away on December 6, 1949, in New York, NY. Although many of his releases credit him as "Leadbelly," he preferred the spelling "Lead Belly," which is also inscribed on his tombstone. His contributions to music were recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as an Early Influence and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
