Led Zeppelin was an English rock band active from 1968 to 1980, during which they recorded eight studio albums. The band formed from the remnants of The Yardbirds, in which guitarist Jimmy Page had played a pivotal role on their final album in 1967. During a period of inactivity for The Yardbirds, Page returned to session work and collaborated with bassist John Paul Jones on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man." Jones expressed interest in joining any future project Page would create. In the summer of 1968, after the departure of two members from The Yardbirds, Page and Jones retained the rights to the band's name and had to fulfill an upcoming tour. Page sought a new vocalist and drummer, initially considering Terry Reid and Procol Harum's B.J. Wilson, but neither was available. Reid then recommended Robert Plant, who was performing with a band called Hobbstweedle. Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as a performer.
