Lee Dresser was born on May 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C. His father was a government lawyer, and his mother was a professional ballerina. After the death of his parents in the early fifties, Lee moved in with his maternal grandparents in Moberly. At the age of fourteen, he bought his first guitar and taught himself to play in open tuning, learning about eight songs. This led to the formation of a band with his friends, which lasted for 57 years with the same three members.
