Leila Pinheiro is a Brazilian Bossa Nova singer, pianist, and composer, born on October 16, 1960, in Belém, Brazil. She is the daughter of harmonica player Altino Pinheiro and began studying piano at the age of ten at the Instituto de Iniciação Musical. In 1974, she transitioned from music theory classes to studying piano with Guilherme Coutinho, a notable musician in Belém. In 1980, Leila left medical school after two years and made her professional singing debut in October with the show "Sinal de Partida" at Theatro da Paz in Belém. The following year, she moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she recorded her first LP, the independent "Leila Pinheiro," produced by Raimundo Bittencourt. Her big break came in 1985 when she won the singer-revelation award at the Festival of Festivals (TV Globo) with her song "Verde." Leila signed a recording contract with Polygram at the invitation of artistic director Roberto Menescal. Her debut album, "Olho Nu," earned her the award for best performer at the World Festival Yamaha and was critically acclaimed. She received the ABPD Trophy Villa-Lobos as a feminine revelation the following year. She continued to collect awards and released two more albums: "Alma" and "Bênção Bossa Nova."
