Lena Horne was an American singer, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist, born on June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York. She passed away on May 9, 2010, in Manhattan, New York. In 1942, Horne made history as the first African-American performer to be put under contract by a major studio. She was secretly married to a musical director and composer in 1947, and due to the sensitive nature of their interracial marriage, the couple moved to Paris for a time and kept their marriage private for three years. Horne was also an advocate for civil rights, fighting alongside first lady Eleanor Roosevelt to pass anti-lynching laws. Her remarkable talent and strong individuality played a significant role in breaking down racial barriers in Hollywood and beyond.
