Nicolai studied piano, organ, and composition at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, where he met a fellow student who would become a lifelong friend. During this time, he also composed library music for his own labels and others, including RCA. Nicolai's significant break came in 1965 when he served as the musical supervisor for Sergio Leone's film "For a Few Dollars More," which was scored by Ennio Morricone. He continued this role in 1966 for "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." His last score was for the 1988 TV series "La coscienza di Zeno," directed by Sandro Bolchi.
