Leon Haywood was an American funk and soul singer, songwriter, and record producer, born on February 11, 1942, in Houston, Texas, and passed away on April 5, 2016, in Los Angeles, California. He founded a record label in the 1980s. Haywood was an accomplished songwriter and arranger who made periodic appearances on the charts in the 1970s, creating cheerful derivations of mid-tempo funk and romantic ballads, often enhanced by smooth string arrangements. His musical roots extend back to the early 1960s when he toured and recorded with R&B saxophonist's band, which also supported other artists on the road. In the mid-1960s, he achieved his first chart entry with "She's With Her Other Love" and had a solid R&B hit in 1967 with "It's Got to Be Mellow," showcasing his Motown influence. Haywood's solo career took off in the mid-1970s with significant R&B hits such as "Strokin'," "Come and Get Yourself Some," and "Keep It in the Family." His most successful single, "I Want'a Do Something Freaky to You," reached the Top 20 on the pop charts.
