Leonard Bernstein was an American composer, conductor, pianist, author, and music lecturer, born on August 25, 1918, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He passed away on October 14, 1990, in The Dakota, New York City, at the age of 72. Bernstein is most renowned for his tenure as music director with a major American symphony orchestra, being the first American-born conductor to hold such a position. He is also celebrated for his works, including "West Side Story" and "On The Town." In 1971, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Bernstein married an actress on September 10, 1951, and they had three children. He was friends with but unrelated to another notable figure.
