Leroy and the Drivers were an R&B styled soul band based in Cincinnati from 1965 to 1972. The group was led by singer Leroy Jones and featured saxophonist Randy "Butch" Yates, along with a self-contained lineup that included guitar, bass, and drums. They recorded a couple of 45s for Coral Records, with their first release, "Blow Wind/L-O-V-E," achieving some sales. The two 45s were credited to local artist Kenny Smith and Cincy's Accident Records, with Kenneth Hawkins co-writing alongside Leroy Jones. In 1970, they recorded their third and final 45, featuring Butch Yates' composition "Sad Chicken," a deep funky instrumental that showcased Yates' unique saxophone tones. This track has since gained popularity in the modern funk scene. Legend has it that during a studio session booked to record their single "Rainy Night In Georgia," they had not prepared a flipside and spontaneously created "Sad Chicken" as an impromptu jam. The 45 was released on the Duo label from Chicago. The band members included Leroy Jones, Mike Chappell on bass, Randy 'Butch' Yates on saxophone, Reggie Cavinaugh on drums, Jimmy Valdez on piano, and Jimmy Welch on guitar.
