Les Big Byrd is a Swedish psych-leaning indie band formed in Stockholm around 2011 by Joakim Åhlund and Frans Johansson. Both members are prominent figures in the Swedish underground music scene; Åhlund was previously part of the garage-influenced band the Caesars and also worked with the electronic project Teddybears, while Johansson was a member of the rock band Fireside, which had a stint with Def American. After their respective bands disbanded, Åhlund and Johansson united over their shared passion for experimental rock, bringing in former Fireside drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie. The band began jamming and developing ideas, leading to the release of their single "Zig-Smile," which garnered moderate attention. A fortuitous meeting at a record store with Anton Newcombe, who was on tour with the Brian Jonestown Massacre, sparked a conversation about music that resulted in an invitation for the band to jam at Newcombe's Berlin studios. This collaboration led to the release of their debut album, "They Worshipped Cats," in 2014, along with a vinyl-only companion piece titled "Back to Bagarmossen."
