Les Négresses Vertes is a French band from Paris, formed in 1987, known for their evolving sound that fits within the world-music sphere. The band's name, which translates literally to "Green Black Girls," is a paradox that originated from derogatory remarks directed at them during one of their early concerts. In Paris, the garbage collection uniform is green, and many workers are people of color. The term 'vert' can also mean 'fresh,' leading to an alternative translation of "Fresh Black Girls." The original line-up included Helno (singer, born Noël Rota on December 25, 1963, in Paris; passed away on January 22, 1993), Joe Ruffier des Aimes (piano), along with members on guitar, bass, drums, accordion, trumpet, trombone (also known as Abraham Braham), and backing vocals.
