Les Negresses Vertes is a French band from Paris, formed in 1987, known for their evolving sound that fits within the world-music sphere. The band's name, which translates literally to "Green Black Girls," is a paradox that originated from insults directed at them during one of their early concerts. In Paris, garbage collectors wear green uniforms, and many of them are people of color. The term 'vert' can also mean 'fresh,' leading to an alternative interpretation as "Fresh Black Girls." The original line-up included Helno (singer), born Noël Rota on December 25, 1963, in Paris, who passed away on January 22, 1993; Joe Ruffier des Aimes (piano); and other members who played guitar, bass, drums, accordion, trumpet, trombone, and provided backing vocals.
