Lester Sterling, affectionately known as “Ska,” was a pioneering Jamaican musician and founding member of the legendary Skatalites. Renowned for his vibrant alto saxophone and occasional trumpet performances, Sterling was instrumental in defining the energetic sound of ska and shaping the early foundations of reggae. Before the Skatalites, he played with the Jamaica Military Band and the Wilton Gaynair-led ensemble, honing his versatile musicianship. His decades-long career and enduring influence cemented him as one of Jamaica’s most respected musical figures.
