Lew Courtney was an American soul singer, songwriter, and producer, born on August 15, 1943, in Buffalo, NY. He passed away on June 25, 2021, in New York, NY. Courtney had a minor impact on the soul music scene in the 1960s, characterized by a series of dance hits that leaned towards a proto-funk style. He began his recording career with Imperial Records in 1962, but much of his early work involved songwriting alongside a producer, crafting songs for various artists under his birth name. In 1966, he signed with Riverside Records and achieved national recognition with dance hits like "Skate Now," which reached number 13 on the R&B chart and number 70 on the pop chart in 1967, and "Do The Thing," which peaked at number 17 R&B and number 80 pop. In 1968, he moved to Buddah Records and recorded "Tryin’ To Find My Woman," a track that did not chart upon release but later gained a cult following among UK northern soul fans. Courtney also served as the lead vocalist for the Packers, known for their song "Go Ahead." In 1973, he collaborated with a producer and released the hit single "What Do You Want Me To Do," which reached number 48 on the R&B chart.
