Lew Kirton was a smooth soul singer born in 1948 in St. Michaels, Barbados. He grew up singing in his church choir and later performed with various island vocal groups under the name Jiggs Kirton. An accomplished drummer, he moved to the United States in 1969 and joined Sam & Dave's touring revue as their drummer. In 1972, he became the lead vocalist for the Philly-styled soul group the Invitations, gaining attention with singles like "They Say the Girl's Crazy" and "Look on the Good Side." Kirton went solo in the late 1970s, signing with the Miami-based TK label family in 1977. His collaboration with writer/producer Clarence Reid led to the release of the collector's item "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." In 1978, he released his best-known song, "Heaven in the Afternoon," and two years later, his first full-length album, Just Arrived, was released on the Alston label. After working as a guest vocalist with B. Baker's Chocolate Company, Kirton left TK and moved to New York. His second album, Talk to Me, was released in 1983 on the Believe in a Dream label, featuring singles like the title track and "Don't Give Up Your Dream (Hang On in There)."
