Lifeguard is a Chicago trio consisting of bassist Asher Case, drummer Isaac Lowenstein, and guitarist/vocalist Kai Slater. The band formed in early 2019 when Case and Lowenstein began writing music together. They met Slater a few months later while backing up the Chicago band Horsegirl at a festival. Following their conversation, they invited Slater to collaborate, leading to the creation of Lifeguard and a collection of songs in 2019. The band released the In Silence EP in February 2020 and the Tin-Man single in March of the same year. Their debut album, Dive, was released on October 2, 2020, recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago by Jeremy Lemos. The album showcases the band’s evolution, blending their early material with newfound confidence. Lifeguard's sound is characterized by feedback, noisy guitar, loud drums, and melodic bass, drawing influence from bands like Television, Unwound, Tortoise, and the SST catalog, crafting intricate songs that reflect the essence of the 90's underground.
