Lightnin' Slim, born on March 13, 1913, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American blues musician known for his contributions to Louisiana blues and swamp blues. He learned to play guitar from his older brother, Layfield, and by the late 1940s, he was performing in bars in Baton Rouge. His first recording, "Bad Luck Blues," was released in 1954, and it was during this time that he was given the stage name "Lightnin' Slim" by Miller. Slim recorded for several years, collaborating often with his brother-in-law and a harmonica player, and he spent twelve years with a record label starting in the mid-1950s. After a period away from performing, during which he worked in a foundry in Pontiac, Michigan, he made a brief comeback in the early 1970s. Sadly, he passed away from stomach cancer on July 27, 1974, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 61.
