Lil' Louis is a DJ and producer from Chicago, Illinois, known as one of the most popular Chicago house producers in the late 1980s. His massive club hit "French Kiss" contributed to his success, making him the only Chicago producer to effectively navigate the major labels. He released two albums for Epic and left the label on his own terms. Born into a musical family as the son of guitarist Bobby Sims, who recorded for Chess, Lil' Louis grew up with nine siblings. He played both drums and bass as a child and began DJing in the mid-1970s, earning his nickname after performing at the club River's Edge while still in middle school. By the end of the decade, he owned his own club, the Future, where he honed his editing techniques using a cassette deck and later a reel-to-reel recorder. In the 1980s, Lil' Louis hosted some of the biggest house parties in Chicago and started recording his productions. His first single, "How I Feel," was released on his own label, and he collaborated with various artists on tracks like "Seven Ways To Jack" and "I Can't Stay Away." In 1989, he released "French Kiss" on a label he founded, which became a local hit and later a platinum-selling international classic after being licensed to major labels.
