Linval Thompson is a Jamaican reggae and dub musician, record producer, and label owner, born on October 12, 1954, in Kingston, Jamaica. Raised by his mother in Queens, New York, Thompson began his recording career in New York before returning to Jamaica in the mid-1970s to collaborate with various artists. He later returned to New York to study engineering, only to go back to Jamaica again, where he worked with Lee "Scratch" Perry at his Black Ark studio. This collaboration led to the recording of his debut album in 1976. Thompson began producing his own material, including the album "I Love Marijuana" (1978) and a dub album, both released on his own labels. While he continued to work as a singer, he gained prominence as a producer, collaborating with significant artists of the late roots and early dancehall era, such as Dennis Brown, Cornell Campbell, The Wailing Souls, Barrington Levy, and Trinity. His productions were released through Trojan Records, as well as his own labels, including Thompson Sound, and others. Thompson's work has served as the foundation for some of the best-known dub albums, and he has produced albums for notable artists like Eek-A-Mouse, Freddie McGregor, Tristan Palmer, and The Viceroys.
