Liz Story is a Grammy Award-nominated American pianist, born on October 28, 1950, in San Diego, California. She is best known for her recordings with Windham Hill Records. Story received classical training, studying music at Hunter College and Juilliard in New York City. After losing interest in a music career, she was inspired to return to music after seeing Bill Evans perform at the Bottom Line in New York. Following their meeting, she began studying with Stanford Gold, with Evans remaining a significant influence on her work. Story signed with Windham Hill Records in 1982, releasing her debut album, Solid Colors, in 1983. Her second album, Unaccountable Effect (1986), featured collaborations with a synthesist and gained acclaim among ambient music fans. However, her career faced challenges when Billboard listed her albums in their jazz charts, leading to mixed reviews from critics. She later left Windham Hill to sign with RCA's Novus label, producing two albums, Part of Fortune (1988) and Speechless (1989), before returning to Windham Hill. Throughout the 1990s, Story recorded two albums of her original compositions, two albums of standards, and a Christmas album. She has since left Windham Hill and is currently under contract with DMI.
