LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith on January 14, 1968, in Long Island, New York, is a renowned rapper from Queens, New York City. He moved to Queens at the age of four and was introduced to music when his grandfather gifted him a mixing table at nine. LL began recording tapes at home and eventually caught the attention of Def Jam Productions, who signed him in 1984. His first single, "I Need A Beat," sold over 100,000 copies, establishing him in the rap industry. In 1985, he released his debut album, I Can't Live Without My Radio, which went platinum. His second album, Bigger and Deffer, released in 1987, reached No. 3 on the pop charts, bolstered by the hit single "I Need Love." LL's popularity continued to grow with the single "Goin' Back to Cali," featured on the Less Than Zero soundtrack in 1988. After the release of his album Mama Said Knock You Out in 1990, LL ventured into acting, starring in films and performing at the MTV Inaugural Ball in honor of President Clinton. Throughout the mid-90s, he expanded his acting career with roles in movies like Woo, Halloween: H20, and Any Given Sunday.
