LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith on January 14, 1968, in Long Island, New York, is a prominent rapper from Queens, New York City. He began his musical journey at a young age, receiving a mixing table from his grandfather at nine years old, which led him to record tapes at home. After sending his tapes to various record labels, he caught the attention of Def Jam Productions, which signed him in 1984. His first single, "I Need A Beat," sold over 100,000 copies, establishing him in the rap industry. In 1985, LL Cool J released his debut album, I Can't Live Without My Radio, which went platinum. His second album, Bigger and Deffer, released in 1987, reached No. 3 on the pop charts, bolstered by the hit single "I Need Love." The single "Goin' Back to Cali" appeared on the Less Than Zero soundtrack in 1988, further enhancing his crossover appeal. After releasing Mama Said Knock You Out in 1990, he ventured into acting, starring in two movies and performing at the MTV Inaugural Ball for President Clinton. Throughout the mid-90s, LL continued to expand his acting career with roles in films such as Woo, Halloween: H20, and Any Given Sunday.
