Lonnie Holley, born on February 10, 1950, in Birmingham, Alabama, experienced a tumultuous early life, working various jobs from the age of five and living in a whiskey house, on the state fairgrounds, and in several foster homes. This chaotic upbringing denied him the joys of a typical childhood. Since 1979, Holley has dedicated himself to improvisational creativity, expressing his art and music through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound. His sculptures, crafted from found materials, draw from the rich tradition of African American sculpture, merging culturally significant objects into narrative works that honor places, people, and events. Holley's approach to music is distinct; he does not create in a conventional studio setting. Instead, his music and lyrics are improvised in real time, evolving with each performance and recording. In his original art environment, he frequently constructs and deconstructs his visual works, repurposing elements to create new pieces that carry forward individual narratives, resulting in a composite image rich in depth and meaning. Similarly, the layers of sound in his music reflect decades of ongoing experimentation.
