Lonnie Sattin, born in Jacksonville, Florida, is one of nine children and moved to Philadelphia as a child. He worked various jobs, including barbering, house painting, and door-to-door sales, to support himself while attending Temple University. Following in the footsteps of his father, Rev. C.T. Staton, a Church of God pastor, Lonnie toured the eastern seaboard as an evangelist. His musical career took off after winning a singing contest sponsored by the National Freedom Day Association, leading to a series of concerts that garnered attention. Lonnie embarked on a coast-to-coast concert tour, with a particular affinity for the west coast, where he performed at several clubs, including the renowned jazz spot Oasis. There, Earl Hines recognized his talent, leading to recordings and touring with Hines's band. After Hines disbanded, Lonnie stayed in Chicago, performing at Club DeLisa and Black Orchid, and became a member of the Skyloft Players theatrical group. He later moved to New York City, where he gained popularity in noted nightclubs. Lonnie made his first appearance at the Apollo Theater in 1956 and became the leading vocalist in the famous Cotton Club Review in Miami, Florida. He is also remembered for his role in the Broadway production of "The Body Beautiful" in 1958. In 1960, he traveled to Italy to co-star with movie star Jane Russell in a series of Italian films.
