Lord Invader, born on December 13, 1914, was a Trinidadian calypso vocalist and songwriter, best known for his song "Rum And Coca-Cola." This song, which he added lyrics to in the early 1940s, was originally composed in 1906 under the title "L'Année Passée." While visiting Trinidad in 1943, he had the song copyrighted in the U.S. along with Morey Amsterdam and others as songwriters. "Rum And Coca-Cola" achieved significant success, hitting #4 overall with Abe Lyman and His Californians and #8 with Vaughn Monroe in March of 1945, before reaching #1 in June of that year, where it remained for 10 weeks. Lord Invader performed and recorded in Trinidad during the 1930s, in New York during the 1940s, and toured the UK and Europe in 1956 before settling in New York. Following the song's popularity, he and his co-writer Belasco sued for copyright infringement, ultimately winning their case in 1948 and receiving $150,000 in owed royalties, although Amsterdam retained copyright to the song. Lord Invader passed away on October 15, 1961. He should not be confused with other calypso and soca artists named Invader.
