Lord Melody was a Trinidadian calypsonian known for his contributions to the music scene over a career that spanned more than forty years. Born in 1926 in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, he gained recognition for popular songs such as "Boo Boo Man," "Creature From The Black Lagoon," "Shame & Scandal," "Jonah and the Bake," "Juanita," and "Rastaman Be Careful." Melody began recording in the mid to late 1940s and continued until 1985, three years prior to his death on September 26, 1988, at the age of 62. He is regarded as one of the most popular calypsonians and had a friendly rivalry with the renowned Sparrow. In the late 1950s, he collaborated with Harry Belafonte, who recorded several of Melody's songs, some of which he did not record himself. Throughout the 1960s, Melody worked closely with Belafonte and did not release any albums between 1963 and 1972, although he did produce several singles and compilation tracks. His return to album releases in 1972 marked a notable shift towards the more dance-oriented Soca style, which he embraced by the late 1970s and continued to record in until the mid-1980s. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in the early 1970s, he remained active in music until his passing in 1988.
