**Bio: Lord Nelson** Born Robert Nelson in Tobago, Lord Nelson is a prominent figure in the world of soca music, a genre that blends soul and calypso. After graduating high school, he moved to Brooklyn in search of a better life but was soon drafted into the U.S. forces and sent to Korea, where he showcased his singing and comedic talents in Army shows. Upon returning to the U.S., he began performing with West Indian steel bands in Brooklyn, covering calypso hits and gaining popularity within the Caribbean community. It wasn't until he met fellow calypsonian Mighty Duke, who became his mentor, that Nelson began writing his own material. His unique style incorporated elements of calypso and American music, infusing a dose of funk into his songs like "La La" and "King Liar," which became hits in the Caribbean. In 1989, he was named Uncrowned King in a competition for off-island artists at Trinidad's annual Carnival, solidifying his status in the music scene. In 1990, Nelson signed with Shanachie, which provided better distribution for his music and allowed him to reach a global audience. His label debut, *When the World Turns Around*, featured a digital remake of his earlier album *Love You Forever*. Despite transitioning to a more digital sound, he remains a significant figure in the industry and continues to record and perform. Additionally, he is the uncle of young soca/rapso artist Moj
