Lori Vambe, born in Harare, Zimbabwe, is a self-taught drummer, inventor, and sonic experimentalist who has carved a unique niche in British music. After moving to London in 1959, he immersed himself in the Brixton squat movement of the early 1970s, forming The Healing Drums of Brixton with sculptor Alexander Sokolov and musician Michael O’Shea. Inspired by a visionary dream, Vambe created the drumgita—a hybrid string-drum instrument—to explore uncharted musical dimensions. In 1982, he privately released two groundbreaking albums, "Drumland Dreamland" and "Drumgita Solo," on his own Drumony label. These works, characterized by layered percussion, hypnotic rhythms, and innovative tape effects, have been reissued by Strut Records, reaffirming Vambe's status as a pioneer in experimental music.
