Los Indios Tabajaras was a guitar duo formed by two brothers from Ceará, in the Northeast of Brazil. They were signed to a recording contract by RCA's Latin American arm, likely as early as 1943. In the early 1950s, the duo took a break from performing to study guitar. They returned to the stage later in the decade and released an album in the United States on the Vox label. During this time, they consistently released music on RCA in Mexico, with one of their notable hits being the Mexican popular tune "María Elena," which became a steady seller throughout Latin America. This song was eventually released as a single in the U.S. in 1963, where it spent 14 weeks on the Hot 100 in the fall of that year. RCA continued to release albums by Los Indios Tabajaras into the 1980s.
