Los Jaivas is a Chilean folk/rock/progressive rock band that emerged in 1963, known for blending rock with South American ancestral music. The group consists of the Parra brothers on keyboards and drums, along with Gato Alquinta on vocals and a bassist, who all met in childhood and formed the band. They gained popularity in Viña del Mar by performing at various parties and shows. After the military dictatorship took over in Chile, the band sought refuge in Argentina and later moved to France in 1977, where they lived for an extended period. A significant change occurred in 1988 when drummer Gabriel Parra died in a car crash in Peru, and his daughter Juanita took over his position. In January 2003, lead singer Gato Alquinta passed away from a heart attack while swimming in Coquimbo, Chile. Following his death, Gato's three sons joined the band: Ankatu on guitar, Eloy on saxophone, and Aurora on vocals. Aurora left the band shortly after, and Eloy died of a heart attack in 2004. Ankatu remains an active member of Los Jaivas.
